Whites for Midwinter
Save £9.90

Much of the focus at this time of year falls on rich, red wines to match ribsticking casseroles, but don't overlook versatile, zesty whites that partner oysters, crab and cod (all bang in season now), plus any manner of root-based soups or risottos. This case, very much the ying for the 'Fireside Favourites' yang, features half a dozen whites that are all impressively under £15 per bottle with recommendations by wine journalists.

This mixed case contains two bottles each of:

IGP Ardèche: Vignerons Ardéchois Viognier 'Grès du Trias' 2020
"Slight pear-drop, estery note on the nose, peach and stone fruits. Rich mid-palate and an oily weighty finish. Chunky but still has some definition to it. Quite simple but pleasant drinking. Drink 2021 - 2024. 15.5/20."
Alistair Cooper MW - JancisRobinson.com

Reuilly: Gerard Cordier Blanc 2020
Saumur Blanc 2020
Vouvray: Jean-Claude & Didier Aubert Sec 2019
Bergerac: Domaine l'Ancienne Cure 'Jour de Fruit' Blanc Sec 2020
Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence: Domaine des Oullières Blanc 2020
"It is pure, elegant and refined. On the night when fish is on the menu this is your absolute go to wine."
Will Lyons - columnist for The Wall Street Journal and The Sunday Times.

This mixed case includes

2 x IGP Ardèche: Vignerons Ardéchois Viognier 'Grès du Trias' 2020£0.00

This Viognier from the Ardèche merits special commendation as it is a difficult grape to grow and vinify, and this version from Vignerons Ardéchois has lovely exotic fruit characteristics and a finesse that belies its modest price tag. Light enough to be drunk on its own as an aperitif, this wine has enough weight to take fish, poultry and substantial salads in its stride.

2 x Reuilly: Gerard Cordier Blanc 2020£0.00

This Reuilly wine is a fantastic, understated Sauvignon blanc, produced by the Cordier family, one of our longest-serving suppliers. We have shipped this wine in every vintage for over four decades - it is unfailingly zesty, crisp and refreshing.

2 x Saumur Blanc 2020£0.00

This crisp, white Saumur wine that is produced from Chenin Blanc on the chalky soils of Anjou is a firm favourite with Yapp customers and staff alike. This may have something to do with the eye-catching Charles de Gaulle label, but more likely is because this Saumur Blanc is a refreshing, fruity, bon marché crowd-pleaser that makes for an ideal aperitif or partner to salads.

2 x Vouvray: Jean-Claude & Didier Aubert Sec 2019£0.00

Bien classique! This refreshing, apple-scented Chenin Blanc will make a great aperitif or partner to goats cheese and salads. Vouvray Sec is the perfect foil for the locally-made potted pork rillettes, and together they make a dangerous combination as both are extremely more-ish.

2 x Bergerac: Domaine l'Ancienne Cure 'Jour de Fruit' Blanc Sec 2020£0.00

This is a superb white Bergerac Sec from an organic unoaked 'Bordeaux' blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon. It is a dry and fruity wine, what the locals call 'vif', with an attractive citrus fruit bouquet and a clean, zesty palate. It is a reliable cocktail hour pick-me-up or partner to salads and seafood.

2 x Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence: Domaine des Oullières Blanc 2020£0.00

A gorgeous white wine from Provence which has been particularly well received on these shores. Food and wine matching expert Fiona Beckett described it as "An intense, fragrant, Vermentino-based white to drink with seafood", and we heartily concur!
