We have been importing Champagne from Gilles Dumangin for over 20 years during which time his wines have proved unfailingly reliable. Based in the village of Chigny-les-Roses on the Montagne de Reims, we were drawn to Gilles' rigorous attention to detail and desire to produce the best wines he could from his fastidiously-farmed vine holdings.

Happily for us, Gilles was willing to blend and bottle our own label 'Yapp Champagne' from the outset and it has since secured a loyal following on these shores. Made from a blend of 50% Pinot Meunier and 25% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it is aged for a minimum of 3 years before bottling and drinks beautifully on its youthful fruit. With a fine mousse, uplifting citrus scents and a long, elegant finish, it is a great 'all-rounder' for all manner of celebrations. Exactly the same cépagement is deployed in his superb 'Extra Brut' bottling but it has an ultra-low dosage of just 2 grams of sugar per litre. The finished wine has a wonderfully taut and delineated structure with an inviting brioche bouquet and a zesty, orchard fruit palate underscored by fresh acidity.

Gilles takes great pride in the production of a terrific rosé from a base of 50% Pinot Meunier along with 40% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. With an alluring coral-pink robe, delicate forest fruit aromas and a persistent palate of crushed berries with subtle saline undertones, it is an outstanding example of the genre.

Gilles only produces vintage bottlings when he feels the quality of the wine is a 'stand alone' success and he doesn't mind waiting for a wine to maturebefore he bottles it. His 2009 'Premier Cru' is made from equal volumes of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has a wonderful straw colour, toasty top notes and a rich, complex palate of dried fruit, nuts and minerals. It is already drinking beautifully and will cellar well for a decade.
