Coteaux du Layon Wine

Cyrille Lecointre (and American wife Kimberley) represent the eighth generation of his family to tend vines and make wine at Château la Tomaze in Champ-sur-Layon having succeeded his father Vincent in 2016. One of his first acts on taking the helm was to put his entire 10 hectares of vineyard under organic conversion and today his entire vinous output is certified organic. Cyrille has vines on both banks of the river Layon and his principal focus is on the Chenin Blanc grape that he deploys to make late harvest, botrytised sweet wines of incredible character and longevity.

The main wine here - in volume terms - is called 'Atomes Crochus' (which roughly translates as 'kindred spirits') and is made from grapes that are hand-picked over several passes - or tries - to ensure optimum ripeness. The finished wine is gently honeyed with delicate orchard-fruit aromas and a sweet but well-balanced palate underscored by fresh acidity. It will age well for a decade or longer and drinks well on its own, with fruit-based desserts or with blue cheese. A second bottling 'Cuvée des Lys' comes from mature rootstock and has richer, more concentrated fruit, a deeper colour and even more ageing potential. It makes for a magnificent post prandial bonne-bouche and is such a showstopper, it is arguably best served on its own without the distraction of food.
