Saumur-Champigny Wine
Our good friends the Filliatreaus were instrumental in modernising and marketing the appellation of Saumur-Champigny in the late 20th century by producing fresher and fruitier wines and encouraging other vignerons to do the same. Their classic 'Domaine Filliatreau' bottling is hugely popular with regional restaurants as it's youthful blackcurrant fruit and fresh acidity make a fine foil for bistro dishes such as steak frites and confit de canard. On a family holiday last Summer we sampled it as far afield as Ouistreham and Angoulème. 'La Grande Vignolle' hails from older rootstock and has a bit more weight and ageing potential whilst the magnificent 'Vieilles Vignes' is a dense, dark, richly-fruited vin de garde - from ancient vines - that can readily support a decade's bottle age.
