Saint-Joseph Wine

Géraldine Picaud née Chave recently told us that her and her husband Georges (they are both radiologists) named their youngest child Joseph as a clin d'oeil to the vineyards of Saint-Joseph. High praise indeed and a reflection of the esteem in which the cognoscenti hold this important viticultural real estate. The fact that the appellation was over-expanded in the 1980s and some inferior wines were produced is part of viticultural folklore but the potential of the best sites is enormous which no one has done more to demonstrate than Géraldine's brother Jean-Louis.

Jean-Louis Chave produces two excellent négociant bottlings under his 'Sélection' label deploying some grapes grown on his behalf under contract. The white wine 'Circa' is made from a traditional blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne that are raised in steel vats and oak barrels prior to bottling. With alluring peach and apricot aromas, an orchard fruit palate and great length, it makes a fine partner to seafood and poultry. A sibling red wine 'Offerus' is made from pure Syrah and is surprisingly approachable on its youthful fruit if decanted.

Christine Vernay is another internationally acclaimed vigneronne producing Saint-Joseph wines which shows the appellation in a very pure light. Her red 'Terre d'Encre' bottlings hail from 3 parcels of Syrah grown on steep terraces at Chavanay. The wine is matured in vat and barrels of varying age before blending and bottling. With, as the name suggests, a dark purple colour, black fruit aromas, well-integrated tannins and a smooth, plummy palate, it drinks well from release and can mature gracefully for a decade.

Those on the lookout for a well-crafted and accessible red Saint-Joseph wine will be delighted by the Graillot brothers négociant bottling called 'Equis'. Originating from a single plot of vines in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, it is steeped in cassis and blueberry scents and flavours and is supported by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. A fine display of restrained wine-making and accentuated fruit, it drinks well at 3 to 5+ years of age.
