Savennières is a rather aristocratic and anachronistic specialist white wine appellation, 10 kilometres south-west of Angers, on the northern bank of the Loire. Chenin Blanc is the only permitted grape here and it is used to make dry, off-dry and occasionally sweet wines of great complexity and longevity.
Pierre Soulez, one of our longest-serving suppliers, finally hung up his secateurs last year and took a well-earned retirement. Happily we have stock-piled enough of his superb Roche-aux-Moines to be able to continue to list it here. Enjoy it while you can!
Luc Bizard’s family has been making Savennières at Château d’Epiré since 1749 so ought to be getting the hang of it. The 2009 ‘Cuvée Classique’ is absolutely terrific. When favourable conditions prevail Luc also makes a spot of sweet Savennières ‘Moelleux’ and again we were very impressed with the 2009 vintage.
Nicolas Joly, of Coulée de Serrant, is one of France’s best known and fiercest champions of bio-dynamic viticulture. What was regarded by many as cranky 20 years ago is now perceived as sound practice and today Coulée Serrant enjoys international acclaim. The future looks bright at this iconic estate as, in 2006, Nicolas was joined by his daughter Virginie, a qualified oenologist, who has now taken over the wine-making duties. She has been recently praised by Jancis Robinson MW OBE for ‘turning out some stunning wines’ which we look forward to sampling in due course.
