Corton-Renardes: Domaine François Gay & Fils Grand Cru 2021

Burgundy Bargain alert! It's quite a feat to find red Corton – the only red Grand Cru in the legendary Côte de Beaune – in double (rather than triple) digits, yet Pascal Gay has delivered again. Stylistically, the red wines of Corton are generous and powerful, with aromas of red fruits and violets evolving towards notes of undergrowth and pepper. They benefit from at least 5 year's cellaring before they are opened and are a great partner for beef, game or rich cheeses.

Tasting Notes

The impressive hill of Corton just south of Nuits-Saint-George is a landmark that denotes the start of the Côte de Beaune. The hill's vineyards which lie at heights of 250 to 330 metres and form a natural south-facing amphitheatre produce white Corton-Charlemagne and mainly red Corton. Corton occupies most of the hillside with 92 hectares (88 of which produce red wine) and is the only red Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune. Only the reds have the right to add the name of their climat (of which there are 25) to that of the appellation.

Domaine François Gay & Fils

Domaine François Gay consists of seven hectares of vines around the village of Chorey-Lès-Beaune. Just 3,400 cases are produced each year, mostly sold to French restaurants and local customers, which means there is only a small amount available for export. Following his recent retirement, the domaine is now run by François' son Pascal, although François still assists in the winemaking process.

The wines produced by Domaine François Gay et Fils are expressive of the terroir, powerful and fruit-forward, yet with detail and complexity, and which improve with age - it is their intention to produce 'pleasure wines.'
