Côtes du Vivarais: Vignerons Ardéchois 'Grand Aven' Rouge 2022
'A classic Yapp red' (Victoria Moore) - this full-bodied, earthy, dry, Rhône wine has a bouquet of dark hedgerow berries that precedes a full-bodied palate of black fruit with warming undertones of earth and spices.
From the south of the Ardèche, this cracking Côtes du Vivarais wine is made from Syrah and Grenache and has lots of warming, spicy, dark fruit, making it an ideal accompaniment to simple roasts and casseroles.
This 'Grand Aven' bottling is named after the nearby 'Aven d’Orgnac' – a large historic cave in which wine is matured to this day.
The small (183 hectare) AOP of Côtes du Vivarais was elevated from VDQS status in 1999. It is situated in the southern part of the Ardèche (running into the Gard), in a bucolic setting where vines grow peaceably alongside olive trees and holm oaks. This Mediterranean micro-climate is refreshed by the cold Mistral wind that blows down the Rhône valley towards the sea.

|Made for relatively forward drinking, this Côtes du Vivarais wine will keep for up to 3 years if well cellared.
|Grapes from low-yielding old vines grown on a limestone soil are harvested at optimum maturity and vinified in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats.

The Vignerons Ardéchois Cave Co-opérative (also known as U.V.I.C.A - Union des Vignerons des Coteaux de l'Ardèche) has its roots in the late 1960s when the Presidents of 7 major Cave Co-opératives agreed a unified policy of modernisation, re-planting and marketing. Based in the town of Ruoms, 20 kilometres south of Aubenas this forward-thinking, modernist collective has done much to revive the fortunes of this ancient vine-area, which dates back to Roman times. Today the Vignerons Ardéchois co-operative represents some 2000 grape growers from 21 different smaller co-operatives. U.V.I.C.A is a terrific source of keenly-priced, well made single variety wines and accessible, fruit-driven blends.
