Crozes-Hermitage: Jean-Louis Chave Sélection 'Silène' 2022

'Silène' is the Chave family's 'J-L Chave Sélection' négociant bottling of red Crozes-Hermitage - this wine has an aromatic quality that lifts the intense bramble fruit core to another level. Notes of tapenade and spice are set against fresh acidity and fondant tannins, giving lovely length.

Tasting Notes

Much of the fruit for this 100% Syrah comes from a parcel of vines owned by Florian, one of Jean-Louis' winemaking team, situated on the steeply sloping vineyards around the village of Larnage. Like any drop that leaves the estate's cellars in Mauves, this wine receives the full Chave level of meticulous quality control.

Serve with slow-roast short rib of beef, a garlicky lentil stew or mushroom dishes.

"These wines, which often contain a healthy percentage of Domaine J.L. Chave domaine fruit, are not Chave Lite, as many retailers are prone to suggest. These tend to be rounder, fruit-forward and more approachable than the domaine wines, which are extremely long-lived and deserving of extended cellaring. They have steadily become more intensely perfumed and flavored in recent years, with the Crozes-Hermitage Silène of particular interest. It's made from vines in the granitic soils of the northern sector. At least half of the fruit comes from a young vineyard that Chave owns, planted and farms, so one can understand the potential quality."

Jean-Louis Chave Sélection

The 1995 vintage was the first vintage Jean-Louis produced under his 'négociant' label 'Sélection'. Purchasing Syrah grapes from good friends in Saint-Joseph, it formed the basis for a range that includes a red and white St Joseph named 'Offerus' and 'Circa respectively, a Crozes-Hermitage ''Silène'', 'Mon Coeur' Côtes-du-Rhône and a Hermitage Rouge 'Farconnet' and 'Blanche'. At the same time, the Chave family began restoring derelict vineyards in Saint-Joseph, the fruit from which now forms the basis of several of these wines. The 'Sélection' wines receive as much care and attention as the Domaine wines and their quality shows Jean-Louis' commitment to the region and drive for accessibility at keen prices.
