Tasting Notes

The 'Grand Dèves' Grignan-Les-Adhémar wine from the commendable Vignerons Ardéchois collective in Ruoms is a textbook example of its kind with an appealing bouquet of garrigue berries with hints of black pepper and a supple, spicy palate of dark fruit over ripe tannins.

We've just about become accustomed to 'Grignan-Les-Adhémar', the new moniker that the 'vignerons' of Tricastin imposed upon themselves, mentally if not physically, to distance themselves from France's most infamous nuclear power plant (and home to a crocodile farm!). The Grignan-Les-Adhémar wines are as good as Tricastin nonetheless and they remain great value to boot. The main focus here is on earthy sun-kissed reds that drink well on their youthful fruit and make a great foil for simple rustic dishes such as 'cassoulet' or 'poule au pot'.

Vignerons Ardéchois

The Vignerons Ardéchois Cave Co-opérative (also known as U.V.I.C.A - Union des Vignerons des Coteaux de l'Ardèche) has its roots in the late 1960s when the Presidents of 7 major Cave Co-opératives agreed a unified policy of modernisation, re-planting and marketing. Based in the town of Ruoms, 20 kilometres south of Aubenas this forward-thinking, modernist collective has done much to revive the fortunes of this ancient vine-area, which dates back to Roman times. Today the Vignerons Ardéchois co-operative represents some 2000 grape growers from 21 different smaller co-operatives. U.V.I.C.A is a terrific source of keenly-priced, well made single variety wines and accessible, fruit-driven blends.
