Rheinhessen: Jürgen Hofmann Grauer Burgunder Trocken 2022
To the north of the Rheinhessen lies the renowned Hundertgulden vineyard with its chalky soils that give great minerality to their wines. Winemaker Jürgen Hofmann’s Grauerburgunder has aromatic notes of melon and banana and a zesty palate with plenty of bite on the finish (referenced by a line drawing of teeth on the label). It’s a versatile wine for drinking with or without food and pairs perfectly with light poultry and herby fish dishes. Certified organic and vegan.
Light lemon yellow robe with green apple and stone fruit notes. Refreshing acidity and lovely melon and banana flavours give excellent balance.
On the south-facing limestone slopes of the Westerberg mountain lies the Hundertgulden vineyard which has been planted to vines since the 14th century. Located near Appenheim, its name comes from the fact that it was sold for 100 gold guilders in the 1300s, hence Hundertgulden. Now around 56 hectares, it boasts the highest calcium carbonate content of any German vineyard due to ancient coral fossil deposits.

Jürgen Hofmann
In 1971 the Hofmann family farm, which had practiced mixed agriculture up to this point, turned its focus exclusively to winemaking. Taking over in 1998, Jürgen has enthusiastically developed this estate which lies between Mainz and Bingen in the north of the Rheinhessen. He and his wife, Carolyn Willems-Willems, farm their respective family vineyards (Carolyn’s are in the Saar) and make wine together. The labels for the estates’ traditional portfolios, one located in Oberemmel, the other in Appenheim, bear individual illustrations that encapsulate the distinctive character of each wine and the soil on which it is grown. Jürgen has extensive winemaking experience across the work having trained at the renowned wine school in Geisenheim followed by stints in South Africa, California and Romania and for renowned German producer ‘Reh-Kendermann’.
