Tinto Negro: Mendoza Malbec 2021
Expressing bright red fruit aromas with a soft, supple texture and a spicy finish, this Malbec from Tinto Negro is a versatile wine that works well with grilled red meat and rich, tomato-based sauces.
Tinto Negro (Spanish for 'black wine') produces a range of wines from high-altitude sites around the city of Mendoza. This Malbec comes from plots of deep and cool clay-loam soils in the Primera Zona of Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu 10 miles to the south and south-west of the city at elevations of up to 1,000m (3,300 feet).
Malbec with chargrilled or barbecued steak is an obvious pairing, though sadly there are fewer gauchos in this country to lend spice to the occasion. In Mendoza, steaks are often grilled over fires of vine cuttings, adding a unique flavour to the meat that pairs so well with Malbec.

An exciting addition and our first venture into South America, Tinto Negro (meaning 'black wine' in Spanish) was created by old friends Jeff Mausbach and Alejandro Sejanovich who worked together for 15 years at the celebrated Bodega Catena Zapata in Lujan de Cayo. The fruit for these superb Malbecs comes from some of the best high altitude parcels in Mendoza, specifically focusing on the alluvial soils of the Uco Valley. Eschewing the excessive use of oak, these are complex, bright wines which display the intellectual approach of Sejanovich (one of Decanter's Top 10 South American wine-makers) and his rigorous approach to vineyard management and intimate knowledge of the varied terroirs of the region.
