Mosel: Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Trocken 2008

From various vineyards along the Saar, Ruwer and Mosel, this Riesling from Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt represents the best of the Mosel. Grown on slate soils along steep river valleys, this dry white wine has a wonderful fruit-forward nature alongside natural minerality and crisp acidity. Elegant and light in body, it combines citrus with green apple and herbal notes and has some aged notes of hay and kerosene from bottle age.

Tasting Notes

A deep yellow gold-edged 'robe' has an intensely mineral and green apple nose with refreshing acidity and flinty slate edge. Flavours of orchard fruit, citrus and a flinty minerality predominate with herbal and kerosene hints with an elegant, rounded finish.

From family-owned vineyards in the the vertiginously-steep slopes of the Mosel valley (formerly known as Mosel-Saar-Ruwer), Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt is internationally acclaimed for the production of Riesling. Slate-based soils dominate in the middle Mosel, a region which includes the Saar and Ruwer tributaries.

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt

A 650 year-old, family-run estate based in Trier in the Mosel, with prime vine-holdings in the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer valleys. The estate farms 46 hectares in total, 12 hectares of which are scattered among the extraordinary but challenging slopes of the Mosel.

Skillfully managed from 1983 until her sad passing in 2016 by the quality-focused owner Annegret Reh-Gartner (herself married to a two-star Michelin chef, Gerhard Gartner), this is one of the leading wineries in Germany and accordingly it is a member of the prestigious VDP association.
